The Power of Suggestion

Dr. David Seabury taught me Phineas Parkhurst Quimby’s techniques of healing many years ago. He also told me an interesting story about an experiment he and his friends had conducted on a young man, a ne’er-do-well who lived in their little town in Northern California.

Every day this man would go to the post office, coffee shop, and the bar. Dr. Seabury and his friends decided to have some fun with him and got the postal clerk, waitress, and bartender to participate in the prank. When the man went to the post office, the clerk said, “You don’t look good. There’s yellow pigmentation around your eyes, and your face is flushed. Have you seen a doctor? Are you all right? Shouldn’t you be in bed?”
 

Then the man went into the coffee shop, and the waitress asked him, “Have you been to the doctor? You don’t look well. How’s your blood pressure?”
 

Then when he went to the bar, the bartender said, “Your eyes seem yellowish, and you look faint. Shouldn’t you see a doctor?”
 

Dr. Seabury said, “The man went home and became deathly ill. He called me, and I had to go tell him it was all a joke and that he’d made himself sick by accepting negative suggestions.”
 

Remember that your subconscious accepts the thoughts that are impressed upon it and brings them to pass as conditions, experiences, and events. It doesn’t argue with you or reason things out like your conscious mind does. It’s therefore vital that you choose thoughts and and ideas that bless, heal, inspire, and fill your soul with joy.
